Cannot burn CDs anymore

Hi, I got my Dimension 1100 in December, and its worked fine until now. Yesterday I went to burn a CD using iTunes, and it came up with unknown error. I tried several different discs, of different makes, and the same message came up. I also tried burning with RealPlayer and Sonic, but the computer just froze. As its in the process of burning, it basically sounds quite unhealthy, making lots of whirring sounds and flashing. However it can read and play CDs fine, its just the burning.

Help!

Hi again, I've tried a few of those things, but to be honest I daren't try some of them as I'm not great at that sort of thing. Doesn't the fact it's making noises it wouldn't normally suggest that the device itself is faulty?

Work through the troubleshooting steps in this MS Article first.

Please post back and explain in as much detail as you can what you did, what worked and what didn't. Thanks!

The IMAPI CD Burner set up was as it should be, I tried starting it and burnong one but it was no use. I don't want to uninstall and reinstall the driver, as I don't know what the driver is! It can't be an issue with where the temporary information is kept as the hard drive is nowhere near full. And nothing has been switched or changed in between the device working and not working. What do you reckon?

Well, if you're worried about breaking anything, I wouldn't. Microsoft tend to write idiot-proof instructions. Try it.
