I learned something the hard way a couple months ago.  Fortunately it was a friend who suffered the consequences, and not me.  She wanted to have XP professional on her Dell laptop, but didn't want to pay the additional $79 to have it loaded by Dell.  She had an "archival copy" disc of the Thai version of XP professional, and tried to install that over XP home.  This totally messed up the installation (NOTE: I did not originally use the word "messed" in this message, but Dell's system wouldn't allow the original, and very commonly used, word), and Dell's outsourced tech support couldn't figure out how to fix it, even with trying to recover with the Dell software.  They finally had her send the computer back, and sent her another one.  Whether she ever got XP professional installed, I do not know.  I learned from this to order XP professional with my M60 notebook.

Has anyone else noticed that there isn't an upgrade path from XP home to XP professional?  When I upgraded my desktop, I had to get out my ancient Win NT 4.0 disc, and use that as the qualifier.  Everything went perfectly after that.  What is the rationale for not allowing an upgrade from XP home to XP pro?
