You should make sure you have up-to-date Anti Virus definitions installed and run a complete system scan for viruses.  The presence of svchost issues under Win9x operating systems can be indicative of any one of a number of viruses.

I regularly scan for viruses but have to admit it's been a while since I checked for updates. I'll give that a try.

A scan for viruses without up to date definitions is virtually worthless.  The lowlifes who create these bugs anticipate the fact that new definitions will be written to prevent the ones currently infecting systems, so they create others for which there are initially no safeguards, on a daily basis.  They also anticipate the probability that users will think they're protected, even though they haven't updated their definitions in the last 6 months.  Up to date and properly functioning anti virus software is absolutely imperative for anyone who connects to the internet, or who introduces software from any outside source to a non-internet connected system.
