Taskbar problem

You may think I'm weird for saying this but I guess that's the way it'll have to be. About every 15 minutes a button appears on the taskbar and after 2 seconds disappears. It contains nothing except the default white box icon. It is starting to get on my nerves a bit and I can't find out what is causing that.

Specs:
Dimension 3000
P4 3.0GHz with HT
512MB RAM
80GB HD
SoundBlaster Live!
Integrated Graphics 2
Windows XP Pro w/ SP2
A425 Speakers
15" Dell Flat Panel
Linksys Wireless-G USB Adapter
Freedom Security and Privacy
HP Photosmart 8150 Photo Printer
OpenOffice
Musicmatch Jukebox
HP Image Zone
blah blah blah

Help would be very appreciated.

I think you should check for nasties

Download and run these free programs

If not fixed try these online scans

Also check msconfig for intruders running at start up
The site below will tell what they all are and whether they should be disabled.

    Start/Run/ msconfig
    Startup
Keep the page open then go to link below.

Read the Key at foot of page, then click on "Here" at top. Use the Search box to check all your entries

nope...i ran all of those scans and my computer is nasty free. I have a hunch it might have to do with some update service checking for updates every 15 minutes

Well, they should all show up in msconfig. Have a look there to see what they are and then go to the program and look for an option to change the frequency of automatic updating

Should it be in the startup tab of msconfig?

This occurs on my system too. I first noticed it 27-Oct-2005 (of course, it could have been there earlier). I too can't find any nasties. I have recently had updates from Dell and Symantec, but not obvious way to tell if they are involved.

By the way, on my system, it is every 15 minutes on the quarter hour.

I still think it is some kind of malware

    Check for
    wmiprvse.exe
    What is it?
Windows Management Instrumentation Provider Host program - wmiprvse.exe
It can also be W32/Sonebot-B Worm

The original file from Microsoft gets placed in the Located at C:\WINDOWS\System32\wbem\wmiprvse.exe .
Use the Windows “Search” to find it. If you find it anywhere else then you should be suspicious for sure.
If it is not that, and if you have also run ths following without fixing it......

    Ad-Aware SE  http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/
Update before running.  Get it to fix all

    AND
    Spybot Search and Destroy
    http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/
Update it before running.  Get it to fix all the RED entries it finds

you should both download and create a logfile with HijackThis and post it in the HijackThis forum
    HijackThis   http://www.majorgeeks.com/download3155.html

    1. Please go to My Computer, open your C:\ drive, Select: New >> Folder and name the folder HJT.

    2. Download HijackThis to the new folder:

    3. Double Click on 'HijackThis.zip' to extract and install HijackThis.exe to the new folder.
(If you have downloaded the Self-extracting version of Hijackthis, then it will automatically install in C:\Program Files\HijackThis directory.)

    4. Close ALL windows except HJT

    5. SCAN with HJT and SAVE LOG. (a notepad window will open with the log in it when you click Save Log) (Ctrl-A to 'select all', Ctrl-C to 'copy')

    6. POST the log a new thread (Ctrl-V to 'paste')

On my system, this appears to be something that two HP programs associated with my PSC-1350 are doing. Using Windows AntiSpyware to enable and disable various startups, it seems that enabling these two resluts in the 15 minute cycle thing. I have not put everything back together, so I can't be sure. I also have not contacted HP yet to ask them to fix their problem

    the program are:

hpwuschd2.exe - identified as "hp digital imaging"
hpcmpmgr.exe - identified as "hp coretech"
