Vista express upgrade

I just got off the phone with "Ethan".  He says the version of Vista being sold everywhere else is completely different than what is being sent under the express upgrade.  From what he told me and what it sounded like, the term "Express Upgrade" is when you have the disk, and upgrade from whatever Windows you have to whatever Vista you're getting, that way you don't have to uninstall any software and drivers.  It has nothing to do with shipping, which kinda misled myself also.  I was told late March to early April.  I was kinda excited to get Vista, but this does give a great idea.  This will let all the other people "beta test" in a way.  So by the time we get it, we'll know what REAL-WORLD issues there are.  That kinda evens out my feelings, sorta.  By that time, I sure hope they send out the SP1 disk immediately.

The Dell express upgrade is the same thing as if you bought a "Upgrade" version of Vista at the store, expect that its license says you can only use it on that specific Dell computer. "SP1" is meaningless for this OS release. In the past people waited so long for SP1 because beta tests where pretty small. Vist was beta tested for a long time, and by several million people. The only people that have any real reason to wait for a major service patch are businesses that have mission critical apps/data on their PCs. Anyone using it for Home/Gaming really doesnt need to worry about that, just make sure its compatable with your hardware/software and upgrade whenever you want.

    >>>they might give you some idea of the issues everyday users are having with the upgrades!

I downloaded Vista and throughout the install expected to fail every step of the way.  Instead I was amazed at how quickly and easily it went without a single problem.

At first, when it said "Cannot Upgrade" I panicked, but realized that it was going to do a "custom" install instead.  It very kindly copied everything that I had on the drive to a separate directory and proceeded to finish without a hitch.  It took about 25 minutes and I was up and running.

Of course, I do have to re-install a lot of software....

Edited to add:  I live in the Midwest (CST), but I had to specify "Atlantic Seaboard Time" to get the clock to show correctly.  First I tried Eastern and that was off too.  I was beginning to think I'd have to pick a zone in Britain....

Unfortunately no.  When I found out that it would be 4-8 weeks with Dell, I just paid for an upgrade and downloaded it from MS.

I have to figure out how to cancel my Dell upgrade now.

Installing was a breeze, 25 minutes and it was up.  The flip-side is that it couldn't upgrade, so it did a clean install.  I'm trying to reload my apps now.  Luckily I'm really organized. :smileyhappy:

Vista created a directory called Windows.old and saved all my MS MCE 2005 directories.  I suppose I'll be finished by the weekend.
