Not sure, specs say it is 1.6ghz clock speed., and I don't think anyone can explain hypertransport in laymans terms. I does appear to be a true dual core, they just don't explain if the clock speed is split between them.

It should run OK, be sure you have 1.5~2gigs of memory.

I don't know the configuration of your computer, but when you ran the Update Advisor were you using battery power? Some laptops are set to run slower when using the battery to increase the battery life between charges. Check your your advance power settings.

You may have found an answer to your question by now, but I wanted to offer my experience on upgrading to Windows 7 with my own Dell 1521 laptop, AMD Turion 1.8 Ghz processor.

First of all, my laptop came preloaded with Vista Home Premium 32-bit in December 2007.  I never had many problems with it during home use and bought a D-Link DIR-615 gigabit router to take advantage of the Dell 1505 Wireless N card.

Fast forward to late 2009 and I decided to upgrade to Windows 7 Professional 64-bit and also maxed out the memory in my laptop to 4 GB.  After installing the new O.S., I frequently had problems connecting to the wireless network at home and I tried resetting the router, resetting the wireless card, updating the firmware and updating the wireless card drivers, but none of that fixed the problem.

This past week, June 2010, I decided to reformat and install Windows 7 Home Premium 32-bit instead.  Once I installed the 32-bit version, I didn't have anymore problems with the wireless card and the whole system seems to run smoother as well.  The lesson I learned from this long process is that if your Vista or XP system originally came with a 32-bit operating system, I highly recommend upgrading to 32-bit Windows 7 for the sake of device driver compatibility.  Otherwise, if you do a clean install of Windows 7 64-bit, which you should be able to do b/c the processor is 64-bit compatible, you're taking your chances on compatibility with other hardware devices, especially since Dell does not provide any 64-bit device drivers on their support website for the Dell 1521 laptop. For me, I absolutely needed the wireless capability of my laptop, so that was my determining factor.  Glad to be using Windows 7 over Vista now, just b/c Windows 7 is much more user friendly.

Hello, I have an Inspiron 1521 too. originaly with 1024Mb RAM but i upgrade it to 4Gb. recently installed Windows 7 (32 bit) and the problem I had was with the bluetooth. I thought to dawngrade to Vista but finally I found the drivers for the Bluetooth.

 the wifi card on my machine is the  broadcom 1390  No problem with the wifi card, at installation final steps it was able to detect WIFI signals on the neighbourhood...

 and the bluetooth built in module is the broadcom 355. I tried to look for drivers for Windows 7 on the Broadcom web but it didn't work for me, the installer ask me for turn on the bluetooth and ther isn't a button for the bluetooth, there are not a combination of key for activating it neither. but Finally I tried the R205174 drivers and it worked!  :emotion-21:  the clue for me was this post http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/network-internet-wireless/w/networking_internet_wireless/dell-wireless-370-bluetooth-mini-card-problems-fixed.aspx    and I tried it.

i think the bluetooth works better on W7 than on Vista because I can  hear the music from my phone via bluetooth make calls, use my mobile like a modem (a little bit expensive but i think is possible)... it is wonderful. I'm happy now.

the difference is that in vista there was in the device administrator an icon of bluetooth and in W7 there are two network devices corresponding on the BT modules: Dispositivo Bluetooth (TDI protocolo RFCOMM): details-> 6.1.7600.16385  and other :  Dispositivo Bluetooth (Red de área personal).  in HID there is a BT driver  and in modems too.

So if anyone wants to install
EUROPEAN - DELL TRUEMOBILE 355 INTERNAL or 355 bluetooth module, should try this option.

I Hate that great organizations do not develope  patches for  the old drivers for the new systems, lots of people don't try anything and they buy a new computer completely compatible with new systems... like windows 7.... but only for a few years,  after when Windows 8 or  a new system come, they should buy a newer compatible..

ITs been three years now, but i need some answers from you. I really hope you are still active in this forum. My cousin have a same laptop like yours that came with vista 32. I upgraded it to Windows 7 32 bit probably during 2010. Everything else worked normally, but my web cam never worked (still not working). Is your webcam working after you installed windows 7 on your laptop? Did you install any device driver for webcam or it worked automatically with windows 7? if you installed any driver, from where did u get that ? I know it a long time ago, but if you can help me out i will really appreciate it.

 ‘Dell Webcam Application’ has to be installed to make the webcam working again. You may refer to the link:  http://dell.to/14USs6C. Click ‘Download File’ and follow the on screen instructions.

this thread died in 2012 it seems. I LOVE this board. A friend gave me a dell 1521 inspiron laptop 3 years ago. It had no keyboard and no battery. I connect a usb keyboard and it works fine. I've been using this machine for 3 years in my home network. It has run winxp,win7, several FreeBSD versions, and many Linux distros. If I remember correctly winxp was not usable because a few drivers were not available. Win 7 32 bit runs fine.The display died recently and I connected it via vga graphic cable to an old junk monitor and it is usable. Recently the speakers blew up while listening to  Meghan Trainor "All about that bass" video on YouTube. I just installed a 4 gig memory kit that I bought on ebay for 18 bucks american. A keyboard can be had for a few bucks and a display is around 50 bucks. maybe get a battery for it too. I saw the board on ebay for around 50 bucks. maybe going to purchase all this stuff. I have a hp 15BA015 walmarty and it doesnt run much faster than this old Dell dinosaur. It currently runs win7 32 bit and MX Linux 17 32 bit. It's a great system, I can't say enough about Dell and the excellent documentation Dell provides on its website
