Regarding adding dae in to cx3 80

Hi All

I am trying to add a new dae to the cx3 80 what is the possiblity of sp restarting .do i need a down time for this .

Thanks in advance

i dont think a downtime is required ..unless you are changing the backend speed ..you can use NST to use to install the DAE without downtime ..if you want you can also download the clariion procedure generator which also gives more step by step detail

Power on the new DAE (only power cables plugged in, so no LCC cables just yet !!!)

Set the DAE address to something unique on the bus this DAE will be on (if you already have 3 DAE's with numbers 0, 1 and 2, set the new one to 3)

NOW and only now (!!) connect the new DAE to the previous one on the bus by simply plugging in the LCC cables one by one (the EXP on the previous DAE on the bus has to be connected to the PRI on the new DAE

After both cables are in you will see the newly added DAE appear in Navisphere

I've never seen reboots of SPs and because this is supposed to be a NDU (non disruptive upgrade) reboots shouldn't happen.

Yes sertently use NST/USM to do this, and remember to reboot the DAE after you have changed Enclosure ID, and when you have connected the A side wait to the yellow Warning sign have showen up in Navishpere/Unisphere on the new enclosure under physical, befor connecting the ohter B side

The LCC card needs time to update the code

you don't need to reboot the DAE. When the DAE initially has been given the correct number BEFORE adding it to a bus, it's ok

Are you shore about this RRR, as i remeber from my emc enginering days, is could give some problems if you don't reboot the dae after chacing the eclosure id, but may bee this have been fixed in newer frumon :-)

Now you make me wonder a bit about this. I Never powered down and up a DAE because I reset the ID, but then again: pull the plugs and plug them in again to be sure. There's no harm in doing so if you feel better doing it. I'm sure I never saw anything in the ProcGen about this.

I am talking about an INITIAL setting of the ID, so no RGs on it yet and no LUNs as well (ofcourse)

Some additional insight on this:

You change the enclosure ID on a DAE without having it connected to the backend bus.  When changed, the disks will reset and be reinitialized with the correct disk address related to enclosure ID.

Other considerations and things to be aware of:

A zerodisk should be run on the new enclosure prior to binding any LUNs.

If this is a DAE with 2GB capable disks only and the existing bus is 4GB, disks will showup as bypassed and cannot be used to create raid groups, LUNs etc.  The only way to utilized a 2GB capable disk only is to use the bus reset wizard.  Resetting a bus speed is disruptive since both storage processors reboot at the same time.

The best way is to use the Unisphere Service Manager - this will guide you through the steps necessary to install new hardware and will run checks during the installation.
