SPS Console

Hello,

I have a SPS unit 118030635 connected to FC4700. I see this SPS has a RJ12 connector with "monitor" icon on it.

Does anyone know how to connect to that port? Can I use the SP serial cable for it? Once I connect to it, what I will get or any commands I can run to check the status of the SPS?

Thanks in advance.

It has been a while since I last worked on a FC4700 - but my understanding is that the RJ12 connectors on the SPS is for connecting to the Storage Processors only. The Storage Process (SP) monitors these SPS and determine whether there is any issue with the power input. You can not connect any other cable to the SPS monitoring port and start doing some monitoring. In fact there is nothing you will be able to monitor on the SPS as it is not a processing unit.

Hope this helps, but others can correct me, if required.

Thanks,
Sandip

The SPS will take a couple of hours to charge, but while charging it should be flashing green. There should not be an amber light on once the SPS is replaced and all plugged in. At least that is how it is on the Cx arrays and I would assume the FC4xxx arrays were similar.

If the replacement SPS shows an amber light then it is possible that the media sense cable is bad. Was a replacement cable sent with the SPS?

Thanks Sandip for the reply.

The RJ12 port I was talking about is in addition to the SPS-SP RJ12 port.
I wanted to see what I get on that port.

I got a replacement SPS and it shows amber light X. When I switch off the power button, I do see another amber light -~ beside it and it provides power to SPE for few seconds and then shuts off. So I am not sure if the SPS is really bad one or does it take couple of hours to charge the batteries inside it?

So that's why I wanted to check the console of the SPS to see what's going on.

Yes, sorry. Sandip was able to translate my word usage :D

I think the part was listed as "media sense" at one point in time and that always stuck with me, even though it isn't in any of the literature anymore.

What is media sense cable? I didn't get it with the SPS.

The amber light is for battery fault X. I kept it on for more than 24 hours now still showing amber light. I didn't connect the SPS-SP cable during this time.

I tried the SPS-SP cable but that didn't change anything. I think if there is no SPS-SP connection, the SPS should be flashing green or solid green itself if it's healthy, right?

You need to keep the SPS-SP connection in place - please connect the SPS-SP cable and leave it for few hours.

I understand, Aran is referring this SPS-SP cable as media sense cable. Aran may correct me, if not.

Thanks,
Sandip

That connection may have been used on older arrays (FC5300) but only for testing - not sure what you would get or if it's even enabled now.

The battery will take a while to charge - you may have to wait 6-8 hours to be sure.

You need to keep in mind the SPS for FC4700 are stock in warehouse and they been full charge in the manufacturing .
Since this part are around from some years is normal they can take up to 24hours to recharge because they lost the original charge .

Yeah, I think it was the fc4500 or fc4700 that labeled it as such. And the lun masking was performed on the host (i forget the name of the application), and ATF was the failover software. Things have gotten sooooo much better since then :D

Hey, who are you calling OLD?

I still have very fond memories of my FC4700-2s. I still visit them every once in a while too!

Yes, that was the beast. But that was used on the Dell re-branded FC4500/4700s (which ever one it was) as well. I think it used WINS to enforce the LUN masking :_|

or maybe you are thinking about storagec. The tool that you loaded on each host and that's where you did your masking ? NT 4.0 days ...yeah ha :)
