Inspiron randomly starts
Hi we have a 3 year old Inspiron 7290 which randomly starts for no reason. Its configured to start only by pressing the power button.
starting causes problems as if it does so whilst in its case it basically overheats

That is because you are not shutting down properly. The computer is not completely off if it gets hot and starts up by itself. That is dangerous. See this- How To Properly Shut Down A Windows 10 PC (lifehacker.com.au)
Windows 10 uses Hibernation and Hybrid Sleep so it starts up faster. You think it is off but it's not. This is another explanation. Shutting Down Doesn’t Fully Shut Down Windows 10 (But Restarting Does) (howtogeek.com)
And here is Dell's post about safety from -FAQ - Laptop battery articles - Dell Community
Under no circumstances should you leave a laptop powered on and in any sleep/hibernate/standby mode when placed in a bag, backpack, or in an overhead bin. The PC will overheat as a result of that action. Any resulting damage will not be covered by the Dell warranty.
