How to turn backlight off when idle?

I've been looking all over but all I find is questions with no answers. How do I set the backlight of my LCD to turn off after inactivity? This is the only thing stopping me from running Linux for more than an hour at a time.

I'm running the Knoppix 3.4 CD. My specs:

Inspiron 8200
nVidia Geforce4Go 64MB

Which desktop manager do you use?

From a shell you can always try:

    #xset dpms force off

If you have your video driver and monitor sections of your XFConfig file right that should do it.

HOWEVER, be warned that right no I'm experiencing an issue with dpms and my Latitude D800. When it tries to switch to dpms mode off the screen washes out from the corners in and leaves artifacts all over the place. Don't just type that and run away, make sure it actually turns off your backlight.
