linux and network adapters

I have just installed Linux. w00t w00t.  It is not detecting my network adapter.  LAN connection.  I have a Dimension 5100 with  an Intel Pro 100M.  Does anyone know how to solve my problem?

You need to install drivers from the Intel site.

    http://forums.us.dell.com/supportforums/board/message?board.id=sw_linux&message.id=6446

I had to recompile and upgrade my kernel to have them work perfect. And then seperatly compile

    the new intel driver.

Works prefect on a 2.6.12 kernel / mepis distro

I downloaded the e100-3.4.14.tar driver but when i tried to compile the module, "linux kernel not found."  Does this mean i dont have the right driver?  Thanks for your help sire.

    look in /usr/src/linux
That is the place for your kernel source.

Like i said , i had to first recompile my kernel to get the driver working. It is not difficult if you have
    the right howto.

What distro are you using and what kernel version ( uname -a will tell it ).

if it is debian based like mepis, i might be able to help you all the way because i did this myself.

This is Ubuntu i presume? First you should see if /usr/src/linux exists and contains the kernel sources. If it does not exists you need to download the kernel sources and install them
    there

here is a good ( debian ) howto. Ubuntu is debian based so this should be simular. But please also read an Ubuntu howto and try to understand what kernel sources are.

    http://www.falkotimme.com/howtos/debian_kernel2.6_compile/index.php

You say 2.6 , there is also a minor version number. I am using 2.6.12
    This is important.

here is some info that you also should read

Building modules for a precompiled kernel
