Luke, double click the speaker icons on your taskbar and move the volume control. Also uncheck mute. Make certain the mike is plugged into the correct jack. This ought to do it.

Yes, I have tried that, umm.....It seem to be picking up just a trace of sound, I have tried the volume up all the way, and the volume on the speakers all the way up also....It just still doesn't seem to work. It won't register voice, it won't record??? I don't know what is going on...Please help...again,
    Thanks,

Just got my DELL XPS gen 4 .

Loving it... except the front microphone jack does not seem to work.

the rear one does but that leaves me the three options of 1) plugging my headphones in to the back of my computer and bypassing the 5.1 speakers. 2) plugging the headset into the front panel (when I do so the 5.1 cuts out but thats a good thing) and not using the mic. or 3) getting some kind of splitter device and having both my 5.1 speakers and my head set allway be active together.

I would like to know if I have to enable the front Microphone jack.  If I do and I've missed it then knowing how to enable it would be optimum.

    thanks in advance.

Unlesss Dell has improved it the front microphone has not worked well.    On my XPS Gen2 I got a lot of hum, using the rear microphone jack it work fine.   Others on this forum reported similar problems with other Dell models.   Dell should either remove the feature or put a high quality cable up to the front jack.

Well I have not cracked the case but you're saying there is a cable that goes from the soundcard to the front input?

I'll check it out when I get home.

I just hooked up my new Dell 4700.  it has a cap over the place the microphone should be plugged in.  I took off the cap and plugged in the mike, but the computer does not recognize the mike so I guess that input is not connected.

so, where should I plug in the pink microphone jack?
