vcache settings?

I just upgraded my ram from 128 to 384mbs;does anyone know if i'm supposed tomake any changes to my vcache settings in my system.ini file.

My current setting is;

 MaxFileCache=524288.

There is no minfilecache setting,should there be?

I'm using windows me,

Thanks, and Merry Christmas to all,

Mike

    Hi,

    With Windows ME you do not need to adjust your settings unless you go above 512MB.
    You can read about it at my memory page found here.

    thereal,thanks for your reply.

    i already reset the max file cache to 393216,as per the recommendations on" TweakHomepc" site,should i just delete this new setting?

    Also,Dell Tech support told me on the phone,that my computer should not use 512mbs. of ram.

    This was after i had already odered 2, 256mb chips from crucial.so,as of now,i have a 256mb chip still in the box,my original plan was to remove the 126chip that came with the computer,and install the 2 new 256mb chips.

    Will my system see a big difference from 384mb to 512mbs? i'm using windows me.

    thanks for your patience.

    Hi again,

    As long as your cache setting is lower than what is listed at my memory page you will not have problems with memory over 512MB. There are many suggestions as to what to set your cache to, I can't tell you what is right or wrong with these suggestions.

    Dell told you "should not" use 512MB of memory or, "could not"?
    What is your system model number? And, did Dell support give some sort of reason as to why they say that? If you used the Crucial RAM picker like the one at my site, the memory you bought will work in your system. Once you tell me your system model number I can tell you for sure about adding the other 256MB chip. But, if your system supports any 256MB chips I will bet that it will support two of them.

    No, you will not see a big difference going from 384MB to 512MB unless you use programs that require lots of memory.

    Hi again,

    Here are the memory specs for your system model -
    http://docs.us.dell.com/docs/systems/dim2100/specs.htm#memory
    The system will support the two 256MB chips you bought.

    OK, I'm a little dense regarding these issues and I want to make sure I understand.

    I'm running a Dimension 8100 with 512MB RAM under Windows ME.

    I'd like to increase RAM to 1GB.  So all I have to do is:

    1. Buy RAM like 4 x 256 Kingtson 800MHz.  (Is there any advantage to buying 2 x 512.  Its more expensive.)

    2. Go into my Windows ME System.ini file and using an editor like NotePad, put a line under the [Vcache] section that is maxfilecache = 524288

    and everything should run perfectly????

    Thanks for any feedback and/or advice.

    -Walt
