Virus or software incompatibility???

Hey:

Last weekend, all of my .jpg and .mp3 files had been converted to (unrecoverable) .VBS files (12k). I thought my son may have downloaded and installed some software that changes file associations and somehow trashed them all in the process to a 12k file. However, all 4 of the computers on my home network have the same problem as I booted each of them up and looked at my jpg files in windows explorer. This now sounds like a virus to me.

Anybody familiar with this or heard of anything similar???

Keith

Just a thought...have you run system wide virus scans on each affected system, using CURRENT virus definitions? That would be my first recommended step. You'll want to refrain from sending any e-mail until you rule the virus theory out completely, too.

    :-P

Actually, GB's advice is pretty much on-the-money. This sounds very much like the VBS/Lovelet-CM virus. You can find out more, here:

    Hi,

Go to McAfee for description of what they recommend that you do to protect your systems from attach from script worms--it's at the bottom of the page.

Did you consider that your son opened the attachment and ignored the warning message.

    sktn77a,

I can assure you Norton will catch this specific virus. I believe Steve Anderson is correct, someone ignored the warning.
