To disable the password prompt in Windows 98, restart the computer and make sure you log in with your name and password that you assigned (do NOT click Cancel to get past the Enter Network Password dialog box -- you need to be logged in to change passwords). When Windows 98 boots completely, go to START | SETTINGS | CONTROL PANEL | NETWORK, and for Primary Network Logon, choose Windows Logon. Click OK, but do not restart the computer.
Instead, back in the Control Panel, double click PASSWORDS, and click the User Profiles tab. Make sure "All users" is selected, and that neither of the User Profile Settings have a check in front of them. Click on the Change Passwords tab and click the Change Windows Password button. Enter your old password, and for the New Password and confirmation of New Password do not type anything into those spaces, and click OK. Once the password is successfully changed, close the Passwords dialog box and manually restart the computer. When it boots back up, it should not prompt you for a password.
