Our specifications do not mention CAS latency timings or voltage. The XPS 8700 and the Alienware Aurora-R4 used the same Dell 8GB memory stick:

Can you please specify below properties of xps 8700 ram. (i guess DDR3L)

1. Voltage

2. Cas Latency 

3. Timing

I need above details prior to purchase ram for an upgrade.

DDR3 1600 1.5V, CAS 11 (11-11-11-28) is what I have seen in five of the 8700s I have touched personally.

Faster or different memory timings may or may not POST correctly and the BIOS may or may not downclock it to 1333 or it may not even POST.

I have read of people using DDR3 1600 CAS 9 memory that was down clocked to 1333.

I would trust Crucial, and I would even call them on the phone to check what their online tool suggests and ask what if it doesn't work. 

After it installs, Validate the memory speed using Intel XTU (eXtreme Tuning Utility) or CPU-Z.

Your best option is to buy all new matching memory as a set as they are tested to work together.

That said, I have successfully added two sticks of 4GB memory to one of the 8700s in my family to get it to 16GB. The memory was  DDR3 1600 and 11-11-11-28 was one of the tested timings. I don't recall the brand or details as I did not purchase it, I just suggested it and then installed it.
