3D Mark 2005 Score

hmm.. I might have to reinstall my brand new laptop. Seems as if it is too slow for what it should be.
I got a 3DMarks score of 1041 and that is really slow, or is it?

For one - it would be really helpful if you mentioned which 3DMark you were talking about - 2001SE, 2003, or 05?

For 3DMark05 your score would be normal.

Yes, I am sorry. It was 3DMark05 I was talking about. I also got 9944 on 3DMark2001.

That isn't that bad, especially from the 8600 laptop (if your signature is correct).  I'm getting nearly 1400 with an XPS laptop on the 05 program.  The 05 program is a lot more demanding than previous versions.  This is expected as new hardware emerges into the market every few months and they need something that can really tax a system for a year or two.

Enjoy your laptop, don't bother to reload it.  You're right on par with the rest of them.

is it a big difference between a 7200 rpm drive and a 5400rpm drive?

My 3D Mark 2005 is about 1400 also.  I was stunned to see the 50% drop versus my desktop which has the Radeon 9800Pro 256MB card in it.  I guess there is a huge difference between the 9800 mobility and the 9700 mobility.  I have the 9700 mobility.

I can play DOOM III with ease though, so who cares what the benchmarks say!

There is a huge difference. The 9700 mobility is about the same as a desktop 9600 XT whereas the 9800 mobility is similar to the 9800pro.
