I have inspiron 8500. The symptoms of my problem are

1. Automatically shuts down after 10 seconds
2. Sometimes starts and after about 15 minutes the AC adapter plug gets very very hot, but the temperature of the system is at about 110 deg (fer) (I have fan control software installed). At this point I generally shut down fearing the heat might fry my motherboard (I hope its not already fried!)
