Did you install the Intel chipset drivers and the NSS?

Download and install these.

There is a certain order that the drivers should be installed in.

Never found the Intel chip for this 1501 inspiron.  Went back to driver download did the Ricoh again the base system device disappeared on device manager.   One problem after the other here.  My wireless connection failed says need to check Windows zero configuration.  Not sure if I did a windows repair installation if that would correct it.

Give this a try to correct wireless issue.

Go to

-Start and All Programs

-Dell Wireless (should have been installed with wireless drivers)

-choose Dell Wireless WLAN Card Utility

-remove checkmark from "Let this tool manage your wireless networks"

-now xp will manage it in the bottom right of the screen

-click on the wireless icon and view wireless networks and connect that way

This Base System Device issue is Chipset based and is removed when the RICOH driver is installed
