Boot problem- Inspiron 5100
Recently my Inspiron 5100 with XP has failed to boot completely when powered on. I get the initlal Dell screen, the fan goes on, but nothing else happens. I hold the power switch down several seconds to turn off the machine, then press it again. This time, the computer starts up normally. Dell support sent me a long email with several suggestions (which suggests to me that they don't know what's happening here). Has this happened to anyone on the forum?

Hmm... well this has happened about 4 times. I don't use the system restore, I actually have it turned off. Let me know if it happens again please :-)
Glad yours is up to par again!

I have recently had the same problem and tried system restore and a repair install, but am still having the problem, do the blinking number lock and caps lock light next to my power button have anything to do w/ diagnosing what's wrong?
thanks for any help that is available

No I haven't tried Dell support on the problem yet, I've always had better luck in here w/ finding solutions. If it continues to act up I will try a system restore, although I think it may have to do w/ a CD I left in the drive b/c when I don't have any CDs in there it boots fine, so perhaps its just trying to boot from a non-bootable CD.
Thanks

Called Dell support, and actually got someone who spoke English very well, he had me take out my hard drive, CD-Rom and put them back in, then remove the RAM chips and switch their spots then I closed everything back up, put the battery in hooked up the power and next thing I know I running perfectly again. He said that the connections just needed to be redone. I hope this helps.
have a good one!

Finally found what was wrong w/ mine. After replacing the hard drive when Dell shipped me a new one, it did it again I found my DSL adapter plugged into my USB hub was causing the problem. I haven't a clue how, but once I plugged it directly into the computer the problem has gone away.
just for the record its a 2wire home phone line network adapter for USB, in case it helps someone else.
Perhaps Dell will look into it and fix the problem
