Data Transfer

I have a new dell 600m and an old Latitude CSx. I want to transfer the data to the 600m from the Latitude. My question is " What ports and cables to I need or use to hook up the two computers?"  . Latitude ports are PS/2, USB, parallel connector, docking connector, vid, media bay connector and PC card slots(2). 600m basically has all the ports serial/ parallel/ s-vid/USB network.

    Jaames,

There are multiple ways to backup or transfer data. I normally will use a cross-over cable if both systems have a network jack otherwise I use either an external harddrive or ZIPdrive. You may want to do one of these or you may want to do a search on the forum and see what other users have recommended.

    Thank you for choosing Dell.

You could get a parallel cable (sometimes sold under the name "Laplink cable"), but it seems that it is difficult to get one since they aren't used very often today.
There exist devices that can link together two PC via their USB ports. Maybe you can get one like this.
Finally, you can buy a memory stick or, depending on the amount of data you haave to transfer, an external harddirve which connect to the USB port. Especially with the external harddrive you'll have the possibility to back up regularly the data on your 600m to have a copy when the internal harddrive should fail.

    Thanks Guys

You put me in the right direction and I bought a USB 2.0 Host to host Link Adapter. It ran at 1.1 because my Latitude USB was 1.1 . Cable went from USB to USB and cost me 39.99.  I transfered over all my data including all my internet favs and email.

Can you tell me where you bought this cable and who the manufacture is.  I tried hooking a IOGEAR GUN161 USB 1.1 Data Transfer Cable up to my desktop running XP Home, and my Laptop running XP Pro.  I have a Gateway 700C Desktop, and a Inspiron 8600 laptop.  The install for my desktop went fine, as did installing the program on my laptop, but after it brought up the message that the driver wasn't XP Certified, it crashed my laptop.  I tried it a few times, but the same thing kept happening.  Even ran Norton WinDoctor to see if Windows showed any errors.

Can anyone help me.  I could use a crossover cable through my network card, but this would be quite an inconvienence as I will be connecting up to many computers from time to time, but some only once.  The USB program is easy to install and uninstall, so it would be the best one if I could get it working.

    Thanks in advance,

The USB 2.0 host-to-host link adapter is a high speed USB 2.0 solution for peer to peer network file sharing via USB ports. The software PC-Linq provides a file transfer program that is similer to Windows Program Manager so you can easily drag and drop files or create folders in your local computer and in the linked remote computer. Supports 98SE, ME, W2000, and XP.

I bought this at a local computer store  Cost  39.95 +tax

Certified USB (tm) and labeled...........USB 2.0 Host to Host Link Adapter. It is FCc and CE compliant. I cannot see a phone number anywhere in the literature except the name "Certified high speed USB "

Ok I went to the net and found it under  www.linkusb.com   .  Try that and maybe you can find a store near you.

Does anyone know why I might have had trouble installing the driver on my Inspiron 8600 with XP Pro, but not on my desktop - Gateway 700C running XP Home ?

Just curious, because one worked fine, and the other just continued to crash.

    Thanks,
