HDD transfer

Hi I like to know how to transfer the data from a Dimention 4500 to a Inspiron 8600 the size is 15 GB and I have 40 GB on the laptop. now I have a 3.5 HDD with one of this 2.5 USB 2.0 Aluminum hard disk drive enclosure case, I try to clone with ( 2003 Norton clone ) with this one and it wont boot up. 
I also have a HD IDE adapter converter? will this work better.~~~~Thanks ...Mike

    You can't transfer the operating system and installed programs. Attach the external drive to the desktop, copy the data files, and then move them to the notebook.

    The operating system and all programs will have to be installed onto the notebook from the original media.

    Don't think you'll have much luck as the Dimension is a desktop, and the Inspron is a laptop.  As the previous member said, install XP onto the new drive, then copy your files over to the new drive.
