Inspiron 9100 Video Driver Problems

About four months ago Windows Update told me I needed to update my video driver.  I did so, but I could no longer view my desktop at the resolution I had previously (WUXGA, 1920x1200).  I tried to remove the driver and reinstall a new one, and several other fixes, but nothing worked.  I then was instructed by Dell to reinstall Windows, and I did so.  I tried to download the driver and it gives me an error message that says something about hardware missing, try installing a basic VGA ... I'm not on my system right now since the modem is also corrupted, so if this isn't enough information to describe the problem I'll get the full error messages.  I have an ATI Mobility Radeon 9700, but XP is using the lame integrated graphics right now, letterboxed.  How in the world do I get the ATI stuff installed?  I've tried downloading from Dell's and ATI's sites, but nothing is working.  My warranty has expired during the case, but Dell is refusing to help me.  Must be a nice moneymaker, stringing people along until the warranty runs out then charging $199 for service.  Anyway, can someone please help?  Much thanks and appreciation.
