Microphone help
Hello to all. I have an Inspirion 6400. Today I purchased a Radioshack Gigaware microphone. When using the Windows sound recorder, I get no sound at all rerecorded. I have a Sigma Tel High Definition CODEC. Does this soundboard support a microphone (there is a jack), if so any ideas on why I can't record from my mic? This is the second mic I have tried so it isn't the mike. This laptop was purchased new with Vista already on it.
Thanks,
dd

Thanks for replying. I have checked the microphone levels in the microphone properties box: control panel, hardware and sound, manage audio devices, recording tab, select Sigma Tel microphone (which shows working) then click properties and levels tab. Then the only option I have is to adjust the microphone and microphone boost which are both set at highest level. I have attempted to locate an updated driver but can not locate one. I did see on this forum or the Microsoft Vista forum that I should be able to pull up a box with more controls including unmuting the microphone. I do not have that box. Also, when I plug the microphone in, no box pops up. Microphone is the second one purchase, it is powered and has fresh batteries so it isn't the microphone. I think today I will go buy a USB microphone and see if I can get that to work.

"Also, when I plug the microphone in, no box pops up. "
For some reason mics usually don't work without being selected in the popup. Go to Start/Control Panel/ Sigmatel and check the 'allow popups' box. Then plug in the mic again and test it.

I just googled Gigaware and see that it is a usb device. In that case the popup doesn't matter ... the popup is for the mic/line-in jack.
With a usb mic you have to make sure that it is selected to be the default recording device. In XP you do that using the dropdown box in Audio Properties. In Vista I think it is something like Control Panel / Hardware and Sound/ Sound (or in "Classic View" there's a direct link to "Sound" in the Control Panel)/...
Your usb device should be selected instead of 'Sigmatel'.

Sorry if I confused the issue but I don't have a USB mike yet. The mike in question is a standard jack.
Thanks,

"I did see on this forum or the Microsoft Vista forum that I should be able to pull up a box with more controls including unmuting the microphone. I do not have that box."
That would be if you are monitoring the input signal. To see more about enabling monitoring, look at the 2nd question in the FAQ -- the 1st thread on this board.
"Also, when I plug the microphone in, no box pops up. "
There should be an option to allow the insertion event popup dialog. You might try re-installing your Sigmatel audio driver.
"Microphone is the second one purchase, it is powered and has fresh batteries so it isn't the microphone. "
'Computer' mics don't usually need to run off batteries because they draw a small voltage from the sound card's mic jack for their power needs.

ok you can try this
go to control panel there go to sigmatel icon, double click on it, then you have put a check mark on allow windows pop up something... then just unplugg your mic and plug it back on, windows should recognizing as a new HW found....
if that doesnt work, go to support.dell.com and update sigmatel audio driver on
