Pentium Processors Comparison

I am looking for some information about the differences between a Pentium-M and a Pentium 4 processor. Though considering the sight I am on, I may get a biased answer, but I will ask anyway. I am trying to decide between an HP dx5000 and the Dell Inspiron 8600. The main difference I can see is that the dx5000 has a Pentium 4 w/ HT and the i8600 has a Pentium-M. I plan to use the notebook for everything from Microsoft Office software to music to DVD viewing to moderate gaming (not the high detail need a 128MB+ video card games though). I would also like to have a certain level of portability - from taking the notebook to class to just unplugging and going away from the desk to do some work. However I still want to have the high level of performance when I am unplugged. Any information with which computer will suit me better...or if there are any suggestions on other computers?

Thanks for the help.

The Pentium-M runs cooler and uses a lot less power, and gives away little in performance to the Mobile P4.  The main selling point for the mobile P4 is that it is cheaper than the Pentium-M.

    Try looking here.
P4 gets you bigger, heavier, and less battery life.
PM gets you smaller, lighter, and more battery life.
From your usage description I don't think you would notice a performance  difference between the two.
I can find no reference to the HP model mentioned.  Are you sure it's a DX5000?  Do you mean ZX?
Of the two, I would have to recommend the system that exists.

The Pentium 4 is a bit faster than the Pentium-M when on AC, but when running on battery, the Pentium 4 runs in 90% of the notebooks much slower while the Pentium-M can keep it's full speed (if you want). The Pentium-M is also better suited for use in quiet environments because cooling is very silent (the fans are most of the time off) while the Pentium 4 need much more cooling which results in more fan noise.
