Targetted Read Test Error Codes

My Inspiron laptop failed its targetted read test today.  The error code was Failed (Error code: WHD20-AAH) and it tells me there was an Error while reading sector 4127299 and an Error while reading sectors 4127300 through 4127363.

Does this mean my hard drive may be going to fail sometime soon and is there anyway I can correct the errors.

Thanks

Martin

    abun66,

2000-0146 means the hard drive is failing or has failed. If under warranty, click on the blue Dell-Allan D on the next page, start conversation with, then please provide the following...

    first and last name

    shipping address

    phone number

    email address

    service tag

If your system is out of warranty, you need to replace the hard drive.

    Hello Abun,

In order to drill down the functionality of the hard drive, I would suggest you to run the Pre-Boot System Assessment (PSA / ePSA) Diagnostics. It is just to check the functionality of the hardware installed in the computer. Run the test and check if gives any error code. Note down the error code and update me with the same, would let you know the next course of action. I would also like to inform you that back your data from the computer before the hard drive dies completely.

Please write back with results, would be glad to assist you further.

    Hi Allan

Tried to reset the BIOS to default but after I pressed F2 and went into system screen, I can't seem to see a System Setup screen to actually then do the re-set. Any suggestions please. Thanks

    Hi Abun,

Thank you for replying. Error code: 2000-0146 (DST Log contains previous errors) refers to previous errors in the hard drive which might not really be a hardware failure. Please try the following steps:

-- Reset the BIOS to the defaults for these error codes. For more information on resetting the BIOS to the defaults, refer to the Resetting the System Setup (BIOS) to its Default Settings section.
-- After resetting the BIOS to the defaults, re-run the diagnostics if you receive the same error code the hard drive needs to be replaced.

**Note: If the computer is able to boot into Windows you should back up your important information and files, for information on how to do this, refer to Dell Knowledge Base article Backing up and Restoring Important Files and Data.

Please write back with results, would be glad to assist you further.
