Go to SolutionWindows 8 self repair feature
Doesn't work on my Inspiron 17R. My service tag is <ADMIN NOTE: Service tag removed per privacy policy> and my warranty expires on 2/22/2014. I bought the computer on 2/21/2013. While checking out this self-repair feature I got an "Insert Media " prompt followed by "some files are missing etc." I was then instructed that my Windows Installation or recovery media will provide these missing files." I then inserted aforementioned recovery media that's been created with Dell's Backup and Recovery Software. I'm not supposed to have this installation DVD because it doesn't come with Dell Computers anymore.
I asked for it soon after I bought the computer and couldn't create recovery media with Dell's Backup and Recovery software. BTW this DVD-R was "successful" in creation. I made this disk twice. I then received an "Invalid Media" message. I then inserted the installation DVD and Windows reinstalled from the DVD. Next I retested the self repair feature and all of the error messages repeated. So I then reinstalled Windows a second time to see if it would repair the self repair feature. It did not.
I gave up until May 29, 2013 when I woke up in the mood for a fight. I called Technical Support. They did this, that and the other then concluded that I needed a new hard drive. A technician came with the part a day late on May 31, 2013 but that is a separate issue that I am dealing with at Headquarters on 1 Dell Way. After the "new hard drive" was installed, setup and the technician had left, I visited the Dell's Support site. I entered my Service Tag info, clicked "Submit", then Warranty. To my amazement the warranty end date for Premium Hardware and Software had changed from 2/22/2014 to 5/23/2013--8 days before the technician put the "new" hard drive in.
I immediately called Technical Support and asked them to fix the date and they said that they couldn't do it. They said only Dell could make the change and when I asked for Dell's US phone number the guy actually said, "I'm sorry sir. They do not give us that information". Plus the technician stated that my "new" hard drive only had a 90 day warranty--already used up. He also told me not to worry and that Dell would stand behind the original end date for Premium Hardware and Software Support. I've shown why I have no reason to trust Dell's self-repair feature. Why should I trust Dell about anything else? BTW the self-repair feature did work on day 1 when I received it. I just didn't let it actually re-install Windows. Absolutely no messages regarding missing files appeared.
Finally, because my computer "works" without the self-repair feature I can't just get a new computer. I don't meet "criteria". They also said that the best I could get would be a re-furbished one. Not a chance. Michael Dell would have to deliver it himself and show me that the self repair feature worked. Anyway, I'm done with Dell and have begun communications with some advocate because I made a breach of warranty complaint about not having received Next Business Day Support--not even a phone call.
