My advise is from Old Backup Server you upgrade to NetWorker 7.2.2. After this, you are going to can update to NetWorker 7.4.1. In this way, you have 'converted' data base NetWorker. See documentation where you can see to the versions which you can update.

Then, on New Backup Server, you are going to paste the copy on version 7.4.1 belongs Old Backup Server.

You have to contact with Licenses EMC for do the transfer Licenses to new Hostid (New Backup Server) and inform about update (they have to give you Enabler for 7.4.1.

You probably wish to go to 7.4SP2 which is out now rather than SP1 (otherwise you will need to put some additional patches too).

Thank you all who responded. I ended up using a different set of instructions, basically to make the new server the same name as the old server, then install the same version of NW (7.1.1) and do mmrecov, then after all is working uninstall 7.1.1 and install 7.4.x. This went okay except the media database didn't recover properly I think. I have no media index in the new system but otherwise the clients, groups and schedules all appear okay.

Unfortunately I ended up rushing my setup because I had moved the licenses to the new server while I was playing around with the setup, not realizing this would disable the old server!!

I also had to dig through another issue - my tape library and drive were not being picked up on the new server, even though they showed up in a serial LOM scsi-probe-all command. (try 'inquire' from the command line to see your 'visible' scsi devices to the OS) Turns out that the in the default installation of Solaris 10 if you use 'wide' scsi devices you need to edit /kernel/dev/st.conf and uncomment out the last couple of scsi bus searches.

After all that, Networker finally discovered my tape library but it looks like the old server didn't use the same installation paths as the new server. On the new server I used all default locations. It seems like the media index/database is the only thing that didn't make it into the new system.

#savegrp -O group_name

In this way, new backup server will be own for these index.

After this, try browse by index.

When I try that I see this message:

NetWorker media: (waiting) Waiting for 1 writable volumes to backup pool 'Default' tape(s) on legato

If I try to mount the tape in the library, it loads the tape, then ejects it. If I try to change the tape to 'recyclable' it gives me a 'type is not set' error message.

It ejects the tape as it is unknown to new server. You will need to fix that first and have mm back.

Hmm. I continue to have issues. I cannot locate res.R and when I try nsrck -L7 legato I get the message:

9343:nsrck: The file index for client 'legato' will be recovered.9348:nsrck: The index recovery for 'legato' failed.39078:nsrck: File index error: can't find index backups for 'legato' on server 'legato'

I can't confirm about the media database in 7.1.1. I was so happy to see my schedules and clients that I upgraded to 7.4 before I tried any backups (foolish, I know). Where would the /mm be stored on the original server? Since they share the same name I'll have to shut this one down so I can get into the old one. I can tar/ftp the whole setup to a third location so I can get at all of the old files with the new server up.

Otherwise I can uninstall 7.4 and just start over.

My advise is you copy /index and /mm from old Backup Server with Networker Services stopped. If you do not stop NetWorker Services, the copy is not going to be successfull. This step is very important.

After copy, you have to uninstall from new Backup Server NetWorker 7.4.1, and install NetWorker 7.1.1.

When the installation to 7.1.1 on new Backup Server is finished, you have to stop NetWorker Services and then paste /index and /mm (belonged to old Backup Server).

After this, you have to start NetWorker Services.

Then, you have to see if you new Backup Server can access to database media and index.

If yes, you have to launch:

#savegrp -O group_name

In this way, the new Backup Server will be owner the index for clients.

You have to check the mount/unmount, backups and recovery is ok in new Backup Server with NetWorker 7.1.1

If all is ok, then is time for update to NetWorker 7.4.1

Sorry, I thought that the problem was index for client not for media.

One ask, could you confirm if when you copied \mm from old Backup Server to new Backup Server on NetWorker 7.1.1., you could see the media database sucessfull?

Like Crvelin tells, I advise update from 7.1.1 to 7.2.2, and after this, update from 7.2.2 to 7.4.1

In this way, the migration will be more sure.
