Reclaim space on adv_file device

Hello,

I'm having issues keeping my backups running smoothly to a adv_file disk device. They continue to fill up without reclaiming space from the recyclable/expired save sets.

I have a 2 week retention/browse policy setup in both the Media Pool and Group configuration (I'm still waiting on tapes for longer retention). My adv_file device eventually fills (about 3 - 3.5 weeks after backups start) and backups begin to fail:

"...Waiting for more available space on filesystem..."

I understand that all other dependent save sets must also be recyclable. Unless I'm missing something here there should be 6 incrementals and a full, once those all expire that set should be recyclable?

  • The recycle setting it set to auto not manual
  • Auto media management is checked

nsirm -X shows I have 124 recyclable sets - these sets have the "cE" flag set.

Even when trying to clean this up manually using nsrmm and nsrstage -v -C -V I receive:

"...failed with the error 'volume mounted on adv_file disk is  reading..."

This was the only way I could clear space in the past but this won't even work anymore

Help meh!

Keep in mind with a 2 week retention and I’m assuming you are using a full/incremental strategy, the full will be retained for as long

as the last incremental written that’s associated with it. Therefore, in this case the full will actually be retained for up to 4 weeks.

    Yes That's correct.

In this case FULL backup will be retained for 4 weeks as INCR backup are associated with last full backup.

so logically you are having 4-5 FULL backup copies at a time.
