1/2 wired, 1/2 wireless - what network

Hi, I'm confused.  Can you help?  I have a Dimension 8100 which I attached to a router and modem thru ethernet.  Everthing works fine.  I just bought an Inspiron 8600 with wireless card.  I connected to the internet thru wireless, no problem.
Now, I want to network the computers to share files, printers, etc.
I thought I set up a home network properly on the desktop, but I can't figure out how to add the laptop.  When I try to use the network wizard it tells me either 1) network cables are unplugged or to use a flash drive or configure manually?  My taskbar shows a message the the Itell/pro wireless connection is excellent.  How do I connect?
Please help.  Thanks!

Are the XP firewalls on?  Can you ping the other computer?  www.homenethelp.com/

Hi, thanks for responding.  The web page you suggested has lots of good info, but so far, no luck.  :9  I'm very new at this.  Just how does one go about "pinging"?  Any further help would be much appreciated.

Start - Run - cmd.exe and hit enter.  Type ping and the address of the other computer.  It should come back with successful messages.  Try it from each computer to ping the other.

From your description, I am imagining: * wireless works * Ethernet works (but in both cases to the internet). For the computer that has the wireless, it is possible to connect at one and the same time both wireless and Ethernet (and dial-up as well, if you wished). What is not clear to me is whether the computer with the wireless is also connected for networking to the Ethernet-connected PC either directly using a CROSS-OVER Ethernet cable OR using a switch or hub with Ethernet cable connecting the wireless PC to the device and from the device to the other system. Knowing exactly what (third) connection you have would be helpful.
