I just bought a Dell Dimension 3000 with XP Home. I have an existing Linksys cable modem that works fine on my old computer (Windows 98--using the ethernet cable), but no person at my ISP or at Dell has been able to enable the new Dell computer to access the internet on the Dell via the cable modem and the ethernet cable. They keep having me run cmd ipconfig and ipconfig /renew and the results always come up with 0.0.0.0 or 169.524., etc, with no internet access. Keep getting an error message saying not able to access the DHSC. The network card/adapter is Intel(R) PRO/100 VE Network Connection. So the last Dell guy suggested I might need to install the driver anew and that they would ship it to me (since for some reason the Dell recovery disk had not been sent with the computer). So instead I downloaded the relevant driver, transferred it to a CD-R and installed it on the computer. I then restarted the computer and messed with the modem, but still no positive results and the Local Area Connection 2 message still including a ! and referencing that the TCP/IP is not providing connectivity or some such message. And Dell's support phoneline right now is taking 30-40 minutes to pick up. How can they possibly run a business this way???
Any help anyone could provide would be greatly appreciated.
Anytime you change the device (computer in this case) connected to the cable modem, the modem must be reset. To do this, shut off the cable modem and the computer. Wait a few minutes. Turn on the cable modem and wait five more minutes, then turn on the computer.
If this doesn't solve the problem, go to Start > Run and type services.msc then click OK. Find the DHCP client and make sure it is started. If you can get it to start, go to the command prompt window and do the ipconfig /release /renew again. Report back what you find.
I tried all of the above. I ran the Network Setup Wizard and nothing happened.
I checked the DHCP client and it was started. I ran and reran ipconfig /release and ipconfig /renew and the same result: "An error occurred while renewing interface, Local Area Connection 2: unable to contact your DHCP server. Request has timed out." IP Config either shows 0.0.0.0 or 169.254, etc. and the IP Address shows "?" whereas it previously at least had some funky address.
In addition, Local Area Connection 2 continues to say: "Limited or no connectivity. This problem occurred because the network did not assign a network address to the computer. " So I clicked on the repair button on Local Area Connection 2 and got the following message: "Windows could not finish repairing the problem because the following could not be done: Renewing your IP Address."
Thanks, but same results with the WinFix, still to try the IPFix program. Does it mean anything that at the ethernet jack on the new Dell the lights there blink yellow and not green?
