Computer says internet network is connected but no internet service

recently my computer has not allowed me to get online.. I have been sharing a dsl cable port with another computer in the home for 4-5 months now and all of sudden I am having problems getting on the internet...I have tried to reconfigure my connection, reinstall the dsl/router wizard connection as well as restart the router as the computer suggested but to no evail.  When I try to use the wizard it says that I am not getting a connection to the router and to try again or restart the dsl router for 10seconds... but again it has done nothing.  Again my computer or network connection tells me that I am connected to dsl internet but I still can not get online...If anyone can help me please reply back

Thanks, Will

What make and model router do you have?  Are all computers connected to the router affected, or just one?  Have you tried different cables and different router ports to see if you can connect?  Have you tried connecting directly to the dsl modem to see if the router is at fault?  Are you getting an IP address from the router?  Which version of Windows is running on the computer that can't connect?

So is the IP address you are getting from the router somewhere in the range 192.168.xxx.xxx?

Since you said you were getting an IP address in your previous message, I assumed you knew how to check.  Open a command prompt window by going to Start > Run and then type cmd and click on OK.  The type ipconfig /all (note the space between the "g" and the "/") the hit Enter.  For the network adapter you should be getting an IP address in the range 192.168.xxx.xxx if you are connected to the router.  Report what you find.

I am having the same problem now on my PC. I also have connected to my laptop, and it works. My PC shows that it is receiving IP address as well, and that the ethernet card is functioning appropriately. Adelphia has walked the all th steps that it knows to help without success. My PC runs on windows 98 and my laptop on XP. On phone modem is functioning without problems, and tech support form adelphia thinks there is a glitch in Windows. It has worked well for 5 years. Have you found a solution yet?

    benval,

It is very confusing to try to help with 2 problems in the same thread.  Please start a new thread, instead of replying to an existing message, so that someone can help you deal with your problem.

It sounds like one or more computers on the network has an assigned IP address rather than having it assigned by the router.  Go to Start > Control Panel > Network and Internet Connections > Network Connections, then right-click on the network connection and select Properties.  Select the Internet TCP/IP protocol from the list and click on the Properties button.  Make sure that "Obtain an IP address automatically is selected.  Make sure the setting is the same on all computers.  Then reboot all computers and see if they each get a different IP address in the range 192.168.xxx.xxx and that the error message about duplicate IP addresses does not occur.
