I've been having some intermittant trouble with my internal NIC, where disabling and re-enabling it seemed to work. I've been playing with a PC Card NIC to get me over the hump, and it works perfectly. (I'm using it to write this message)
Yesterday, I disabled the internal NIC one more time, and it seems to have left this computer entirely and gone to the NIC graveyard . PnP can't see it, so I can't install it manually. It IS enabled in BIOS...tried toggling that, no luck.
If you've just updated Windows XP recently, you might to try reinstalling the Intel mobile chipset drivers. On my laptop, I had identical problems, and it turned out that the chipset drivers had been uninstalled somehow.
Thanks, I'll keep that in mind and download the chipset drivers for the next time this happens. We recently got a new Windows server on our lan, and the problems started about then. But, this really seems to be hardware (or drivers, as you noted.)
Friday, the internal NIC just started working again. Very wierd.

Hope this helps.
