We recently suffered a lightening strike which fried the router I had my PC connected to. I replaced the router and all connections are working except my PC. The hardware mgr. says "Device Working Properly", but when I attempt a connection it tells me I don't have a cable connected to the port. Obvously I have a cable connected and have tried two or three different ones with the same result. I suspect the port is fried, but is there some kind of loopback test I can perform to verify? Any advice? All the ethernet adapters I find at nearby electronics stores don't appear to have drivers for Windows Vista.
It would be helpful to know which model computer you have so we could determine which ethernet adapter you have. Lacking that, we can't provide much detail, but you should be able to run the diagnostics for the network adapter which should be found in the network utility in the All Programs menu.
That model has an Intel Pro 100/VE eternet network adapter. You need to run the Intel ProSet diagnostics. If you can't find it on your hard drive, you can download it from the following site and then run the file to install the utility:
The model is E510. Which diagnostics are you referring to. I went through the hardware manager and ran a diagnostic tool and it said it was functioning properly.
I have the same problem. lighting crashed the router, changed the router and everything is working fine (alle wireless laptops in the house) except one workstation (Dimension 3100, with proset 100/ve card) I ran the diagnostics tool it only gives an error at the connection of the cable.
Any idea what this is. The cable works fine with other laptops but just not with this workstation?
