Hi.
I am running xp home. On my desktop, under Windows firewall options, general tab does not allow me to make any changes and the top line is informing me that "For your security, some settings are controlled by Group Policy"
I have been doing some searches and it seems a general concensus that Group Policy is not supported in XP home so why does my computer seem to think it can?
My main problem is a home networking issue which i think is firewall related but since i cannot change any of my firewall settings it is kind of hard to determine if this is the problem.
I have a laptop and home desktop, both xp home. Both are connected to the internet through a linksis router. Both internet connections work. Both have been configured with the home network wizard. The laptop is able to ping the desktop but the desktop times out when trying to ping the laptop. I cant get shared files from either computer on either computer and our printer only works from our desktop, which happens to have the printer connections, in case that matters.
I am fairly computer literate but this is getting slightly over my head. Any help anyone can provide is much obliged.

This is usually caused by a virus or spyware that has altered the Windows registry to prevent you from changing things. First, I would suggest running a complete virus scan with up to date virus definitions. Then, Download, install, update, and run the free versions of Ad-Aware and Spybot and let these programs remove all of the garbage that they find.
If none of these help, do the following:
1. Click Start, Run and type Regedit.exe 2. Navigate to the following locations:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Policies \ Microsoft \ WindowsFirewall
-and-
HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ SOFTWARE \ Policies \ Microsoft \ WindowsFirewall
3. Backup and then delete the WindowsFirewall keys. 4. Close Regedit.exe and restart Windows.
You then may want to go Here and follow the directions to download and run the analysis tool called HijackThis. Generate a log file, then open it and copy and paste the text of the log file in a message in the HijackThis forum where a HijackThis expert can offer advice on how to to get rid of any other problems due to the spyware.
Hi Steve,
Thanks for the reply, removing the keys did work though Ad-aware and Spybot found no problems.
Going to post the Hijack log tonight.
I am still not able to ping my laptop with my desktop. Any ideas? I don't even want to get into how non-functional my home network is...
Thanks for the original reply.
