Internet Connection Problems

I have a notebook computer and just bought a new Linksys wireless router to hook up to my roommates computer. Everything was working fine for a couple of days but then my internet just stopped working. We have tried to reconnect to the network with no success. During this process, I noticed that even when I'm hard wired to the router I still can't connect to the internet. I already talked to Linksys support, they suspected a problem with my computer. I also tried system restore to when the internet was working properly and it still doesn't work.

Does anyone have any suggestions? I'm not a computer pro so I'm hoping I just missed something easy.

Thanks

Is your computer able to connect to the network at all?  That is, has it connected to the router and been assigned an IP address?

Tough to tell from your description whether it's a problem connecting to the router itself or with the router's connection to the internet.  The answer will impact the focus and effectiveness of advice anyone might give.

When you have a wireless router, there are several things to consider.
    1) Is my computer connected to the router?
    2) Do I have a valid IP address? - For a new Linksys router, it will be 192.168.1.1
    3) Is the connection between the cable modem and the router bad?

    3) is quite possible in this instance.  Reason being that even when you're connected to the router, no internet is available.  One way you can check this is to plug the computer directly into the cable or DSL modem.  If you get no internet after that, you can do one of two things:

    1) Unplug the cable modem's network cord.  Unplug the power to the cable modem, wait 10 seconds, then unscrew the cable out.  Then Plug the power back in, and wait for the LED to stop flashing, then plug in the network cable.  Then plug this cable directly to your computer... and maybe to be safe restart your computer and attempt to get internet access.  If you do get internet, simply place the network cable into the router and try using it again as normal.  If not, then:

    2) Call your ISP and get their support.

Note: System restore is actually a useless brutal device.  It is a "touch-and-go" system restore - meaning you may get better results - you may get worse results.  If you can back your system up and give it a good wipe (format) then you'd be able to verify it wasn't your computer.
