1/ My family has a dell 8300 and sony Pentum 4 sharing a cable network.both computers have win XP home..the dell is in my room and the sony is in my brother room..the sony connected to the HP all in one printer.
2/ I have set the printer sharing exactly as i have read some tips on the net as follow:
To open the Printers and Faxes folder ( In the Sony )
Click Start and then click Control Panel.
Click Printers and Other Hardware, and then click Printers and Faxes.
In the Printers and Faxes folder, I clicked the printer's icon and, in the tasks pane, I clicked Share This Printer.
I opened the printer's Properties dialog box, and clicked on the Sharing tab.
I clicked Share Name, and then clicked OK.
That's it—the printer was immediately available for other computers to use.
Now that I had a network printer, I was ready to connect to it and print from other computers on the network.
To connect to the printer ( In the Dell 8300)
I opened Control Panel, and clicked Printers and Other Hardware.
I clicked Add a Printer.
Instead of adding a local printer, though, I clicked Printer Connection and then browsed the network for the printer.
3/ ok!!...2 computers could see each other now ...I thought..because both computers will have the printer sharing with the hand under it and when i try to print a document instead it gives me a message " no printer found " or " unable to find device" as we use to get if our computer is not connected to any printer..I wll get the print message box as it ready to print out with correct printer name ..number of page to print...and all information but :
Status: idle
Type : Microsoft Document Image Writer Driver
Where: Microsoft Document Image Writer Port
4/ When I click " OK" it will not print but will give me an option to "save as" If I click " Save" then the document I would like to print will save in the drive desire
*** Please help me if you know what going on here ...i have try to make sense all the symtoms Hopfully someone got the same issues will easy to recognized these ...
The printer should be a shared device only on the computer to which it is connected.
If you open the printer dialog box on the computer that is not directly connected to the printer, right click on the printer and select "Properties", then click on the Ports tab, which port does it say the printer is on?
yes may be the problem there
....it was microsoft document image writer port...the last one in " ports tab" ...should I change to the LPT port ? ..and i did ...problem still persisted...may be i need to check the port in the other room too?
Normally, Windows XP finds and installs all necessary drivers for network printers automatically if you give it enough time. But you forced the issue and probably messed it up. You might want to first just uninstall the printer, reboot the computer and wait a half hour or and see if Windows finds and installs the printer. (Make sure that the other computer is powered on an the printer is also turned on). If it doesn't find the printer and install it automatically, then use the Add Printer function again, tell it is a network printer, then use the browse button to find the printer on the network.
* I checked..The printer is able to share...and both computers are on the same group....
Now, I think I almost got there...because the printer folder on my Dell ( the one not connect to the printer ) showed the printer - correct share name with auto-printer name -and the computer name ( ex: my share printer name is : HPOfficeJet and computer name is : VALUED-12FF1 then I have the check mark on the printer name :" AUTO HPOfficeJet On VALUED-12FF1 "
I then right click on the printer: the port is automatic adding as: 1/ Port: IP 2/ description: standard TCP/IP port ...3/ printer: auto HPOfficeJet On Value.....
OK...click to print: everything seems working fine! ( status bar show the printer to print - click the printer from the bottom right corner monitor it shows the document to print: how many pages, time and author.. ) except..It is not print out - yes...the printer and computer are ON...IF I move cursor over the printer it will show message" 1 document is pending " !!!!
*** I have tried to use another port ..change to same port with the printer and change to default port ( the system automatic adding with the correct IP address)...It still no output ***
The first thing I always check is the firewall. Turn if off and see if you can share the printer. If that works, it's not the network, it's the firewall settings.
...I turn off firewall...it's still not print out !!!!...I have no idea why...I should not be that hard ..seem to me Sony , Dell and Hewlett P are not mix....
I may try to uninstall the printer then re-install again
thanks for your help....will let you guys know if it works after re-install..if it is not ...I just have to buy another printer for my Dell then...any suggestion what brand I should get ,folks? :smileymad:
I have 2 computers, #1 in my room with the cable modem connected to the router to the computer and printer. #2 is in my son's room connected to the cable/DSL router. Printer is unable to communicate/print. HELP!!!
It gets awfully difficult to deal with more than one problem in the same thread. Please start a new thread and tell us whether or not you have disabled
all firewalls or configured them to allow local network traffic, whether or not you have enabled file and printer sharing, and whether or not you have designated the printer as a shared printer when you post a new message to start a new thread.
