router wireless connection problems! please help asap!

I wonder if someone can help. I just purchased the di 624 from staples. My connection is as follows:
Cable modem (shaw) wired to dlink 624 wired to desktop. I connect wirelessly to this network with my laptop. My problem is in the set up to my laptop. I can connect fine however I have to connect without encryption. When I go thru the wizard on the website for setup of the router (on my desktop) and I click the option for enabled encryption, with either 64 or 128, it will not allow me to input a network key. If I input anything (either 26characters for the 128 or 2 for the 64 byte) it automatically refreshes this screen on the wizard and defaults back to the zeros for the key. If I just continue thru the wizard then I am not able to set up the wireless connection on my laptop due to the invalid network key (when i input the network key on the laptop in order to connect). The only way I seem to be able to connect to the network wirelessly is by disabling the encryption on this setup wizard. I"m concerned with having no encyption in my connection. Also, I have yet to figure out how to adjust any of the settigs for this connection. ie. firewall protection, parental controls etc. Where do I go to do this? Is there a setting on my laptop that enables me to adjust these settings? I dont even know if I have the firewall enabled right now! Please help me figure this out!! Thanks.
