Which driver for wireless card?

Inspiron N5050.

Fresh install Win 7 sp1 home premium.

I have the Dell drivers disc.

When I go through the list of drivers to install, there is one listed for the wireless card for this computer, but it does not have the 'tick' which says the device has been detected.

I try to install that driver anyway and I am asked to "Activate Bluetooth Using Wireless Switch". I went here http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/network-internet-wireless/f/3324/t/19371837.aspx and then did a search for DW1702, which is the card listed on my customer invoice. From that search I am taken here http://search.dell.com/results.aspx?s=bsd&c=us&l=en&cs=04&k=dw1702&cat=sup which lists 3 kinds of drivers: A01, A02 and A03. I have tried all three. A01 and A03 give up quite quickly. With the A02 the InstallShield Wizard starts up and most of the installation seems to take place and then it gives up. Windows tells me the driver was not installed properly.

Whenever there is a problem over drivers, Dell tells us to install the Notebook System Software. There is no NSS on my drivers disc. (It does not come up on the list of drivers to install when the disc is first inserted and is not listed under 'System Utilities'.)  Since I can't connect to the internet without at least an ethernet driver installed, how am I supposed to install the NSS first? In any case when I enter my service tag on here or do a search for the N5050, I am given 11 filtered results and 33 'all related drivers' but no NSS.

I was charged extra for the drivers disc and it doesn't have what I want. The laptop without a wireless card is useless to me.

An afterthought on the NSS. When I first put the drivers CD in, it does install something. Could that be the NSS?

    Hi cambyth,

The Dell Inspiron N5050 is shipped with Dell WLAN 1701 Half Mini-Card + Bluetooth 3.0, Dell WLAN 1702 Half Mini-Card + Bluetooth 3.0, Dell Wireless WLAN 1502 Half Mini-Card and Dell Wireless WLAN 1503 Half Mini-Card. I request you to check if the computer has DW1702 card in the invoice.

Uninstall/reinstall wireless drivers by following the below steps:

    (1) Go to start.

    (2) Type “Programs and Features” and hit enter.

    (3) Now detect wireless drivers, right click and delete it.

    (4) Use the link below and download drivers-

    http://dell.to/QMg5Ud

Choose the right wireless card and operating system then download it.

If you have further questions please reply on the same post.

I can't believe you gave me that link. You need more training. It's for the wrong computer and the wrong operating system.

This is the computer. I am running Win 7 Home Premium (as I clearly stated).

    www.dell.com/.../pd.aspx

Please, if you don't know what you're doing, do not reply. Giving bad advice is worse than no advice at all.

Is there anyone who does know what they're talking about, able to help, please?

    cambyth,

Your system does NOT have a Notebook System Utility. Start with the chipset drivers and follow the list. How to Download and Install Drivers in the Correct Order

Can you run Finding System Information REMOVE YOUR PRODUCT ID, if using XP, run an ipconfig /all log and post it back here.

    Rick,

Thank you very much for your reply and trying to help me.

I followed every suggested step to the line and I knew something was wrong since not even the driver CD had the driver I needed.

Fortunately I could fix my problem.

    Here is the correct driver:

    www.dell.com/.../DriverDetails

It seems like the documentation and suggested drivers for this particular model are listed wrong by Dell, if you have the power, please advice to help fix these problem for future users.

I hope this can also fix the problem cambyth.

Again, thank you for at least trying to help.

    Rick,

Thanks for your reply and help. Apologies for the slight delay in getting back to you. For some reason I couldn't get on the site forums yesterday.

Thank you for clearing up the question about NSS. I did install the drivers in the order advised, starting with the chipset drivers.

I just tried the driver at the link given by cesarParra, but that doesn't work either.

I have used the command line as instructed and get the following. Your continued help is appreciated.

    Rick,

    Thanks for your reply.

Would you mind clarifying a couple of things?

First, am I correct in understanding that in your first reply you said there was no Dell System Software to install for this system, but now you're saying there is?

Secondly, all these links clearly say they are for an N5010, but my system is an N5050. Are they the right ones?

Thirdly, I have already installed chipset drivers and some other drivers. They all installed without problem. They were the ones the Dell CD said were correct. Are you now saying they were wrong and they should be uninstalled and the ones for a different computer, an N5010, would be right?

    Thanks.

    cambyth,

    The log you posted states...

    System Manufacturer:       Dell Inc.
    System Model:              Inspiron N5050
    System Type:               x64-based PC
    Processor(s):              1 Processor(s) Installed.
                               [01]: Intel64 Family 6 Model 42 Stepping 7 GenuineInt
    el ~1600 Mhz
BIOS Version:              Dell Inc. A04, 23/03/2012
    Windows Directory:         C:\Windows
    System Directory:          C:\Windows\system32

It wasn't a full log but it shows your system is an Inspiron N5050, 64-bit system. The part that says the version of Windows, when you installed Windows and the network adapters were missing.
