Upgrade CPU on OptiPlex 5055 Ryzen

Dear all,

I have a OptiPlex 5055 Ryzen with a 1st Gen Ryzen 1700 and would like to upgrade to Ryzen 3950X.

In the official docs and BIOS releases there is no information about compatibility to newer Ryzen models. Since the socket stays the same (AM4), the hardware should have no issues, but the BIOS needs to support at least AMD's AGESA 1.0.0.2, which I cannot find any reference of. Probably DELL is brewing its own BIOS from scratch?

So, does anyone have any information if the upgrade is doable?

Thanks!

cheers

Chris

Optiplex 5055 Spec Sheet has a list of compatible CPU's.

While both aforementioned CPU's take the AM4 socket, compatible chipsets are different.  While both are compatible with different chipsets, neither gave me mention of the B350 chipset.  In exploring the 5055 chipset, I ran across the spec. sheet.

Also:  The Ryzen 1700 is 65w, while the 3950x is 105w.  So, even if the Optiplex 5055 could take a 3950x, it would need better cooling and, depending on the size/form factor, a better PSU.
