Go to SolutionDell T3640 support for GEN11 processors?
Hi,
i have just acquired a Dell T3640 precision workstation with a core i5-10500 processor. Can the Dell T3640 support GEN 11 processors? (i know what the standard support document says) - specifically i am looking at the W-13xx series of processors but cannot find out if it is supported.

3640 is already obsolete.
Replacement 3650 does 11th gen

Hi Speedstep, that wasn't my question, as i know its an older model and i know what the original supported cpu are - but GEN11 cpus are meant to be backward compatible with W480 motherboards - hence my question of support.

There is no support for changing CPU in ANY Model
It should also be noted that the VRM heatsink is missing from the low end 300W power supply model as is the 125W heatsink. Supported processors is more than just chipset related including bios microcode.
Higher end processors and configurations use the optiional 1000W power supply and have Front Fan as well as other fans for HDD etc.
Dell only supports what came with the system.
@DELL-Chris M would have the information on what the validated processors are for this model.
End users do not have that information.

@speedstep thats not exactly true - an alienware machine had an updated bios to support the GEN11 CPU's (it may have been an XPS machine - i'll try to dig out the link)

XPS 8940 is completely different machine and chipset and power supply etc.
Does not support ECC or XEON processors like the Precision 3640
I own this model specifically.
The policy about processor changes has been in place for over 30 years now.
@DELL-Chris M will know what the validated processors are for the Precision 3640.

There was defiintely a different cooling system for 125W cpus but I do not know the part numbers. @DELL-Chris M would have more information for 3640 and 3650.
Either way there is no XMP on a precision model.
