I'm running my Precision 3660 with the configuration you describe -
It came with Dell-supplied 16gb as 2x8gb
I added 2 16gb PNY modules and have been running more than a month with 48gtb and no issues - as snip from System->About shows
The 16gb module was around $95ea when I purchased a month ago, now it's under $75 ($150 for 32gb) - PNY Performance 16GB DDR5 4800Mhz (PC5-38400) CL40 MD16GSD54800-TB) At some point, I may swap the 8gb dell modules for 32gb modules when prices come down enough - but while I was having performance issues with 16gb system ram, 48gb is enough for almost everything I do..
(Yes, the Dell specs and manual do not list this configuration, but unless you're purchasing add-on memory direct from Dell, they're not going to support it [harrdware failure wise] whether it's supported config or not)

If the specs do not show it as compatible then it may not work. Plus running a 48GB configuration will not give you quad channel on all 48GB of the RAM modules. Also not knowing what type the RAM you have may be, you cannot mix ECC and Non-ECC RAM. So in the end trying it is the only way to find out. The worse that can happen is the system may not POST.

Thank you for answer.
I have used Dell workstation more than 15 years, including T3500 and T5810. Based on my experience with Dell workstation, I am very surprised that it is not easy to upgrade RAM for 3660. I cannot think of any reason for it.

Thank you for reply. Fortunately, they are all samsung RAM non-ECC, same type. I know that installing additional RAM will slow down the RAM, but just curious about it.

With it being a newer model, safest bet is to not void your warranty with an unsupported configuration. If anything else went wrong, you'd have to put the configuration back to pursue a warranty claim. Also with the 3660 being newer, sticking with supported configurations is also a safer bet
Overall, Dell's have been hit and miss with mixing RAM. Some don't even tolerate mixing brands of RAM. If you tried the configuration in question, all other specs would have to be the same - brand, speed, and volts. Also, non-ECC and ECC especially can't be mixed.
