Error Message When Opening MS Word Doc

Every time I open Microsoft Word (2000 SR-1)  an error message
is displayed that says "Microsoft Word for Windows has
encountered a problem and needs to close.  We are sorry for the
inconvenience."  When my computer first began to do this  I
uninstalled Microsoft Word and then reinstalled it using the
CD-ROMS that were sent to me when I originally received my
computer.  This was unsuccessful at solving the problem.  Next
I called Dell Tech Support.  I spoke with a representative for
approximately one and a half hours.  We uninstalled all software
on my system that was Microsoft-based and then reinstalled it;
however  this was unsuccessful as well.  The representative told
me that he would have to transfer me to an Advanced Software
Problems department; however  I was transferred incorrectly and
subsequently disconnected.  At this point  I was extrememly
frusterated and did not call back.  About a week later  I called
Tech Support once again and the representative I spoke with
informed me that I should speak with a Software and Periphials
agent.  After looking through my account  she said that this
service was not included in my Tech Support package and advised
me to try the support website.  I did a search and found the
solution to receiving an error message with Microsoft Word.
This webpage said that most likely I had a problem with the
normal.dot file and to do a search for the file and subsequently
rename it.  I did a search  but the results showed that no such
file existed on my computer  even though Microsoft Word is fully
installed on my hard drive.  I have run all virus programs and
disk cleanings I have available to me as well  so I don't
believe that is the problem.  As far as I know  everything on my
system is completely up to date.  I would truly appreciate it if
you could contact me as soon as possible with some suggestions
for fixing my software as I use Microsoft Word very, very
frequently  I have been severly inconvenienced by not having it
available to me.    Thank you very much. crazyboutsoccer@hotmail.com

    crazyboutsoccer,

There is a copy of normal.dot on your computer. Make sure that before you search for it you have Windows Explorer set to display hidden files and folders (in Explorer go to Tools|Folder Options|View tab, check "Show hidden files and folders."

You don't say what operating system you are using, but in Windows XP the templates are in your Documents and Settings folder in the Application Data subfolder, which is a hidden folder.
