CD-Rom Samsung SN-124 not recognized under My Computer and does not function

I have an Inspiron 8200, running win xp home. There is an issue with My Computer/Windows Explorer in recognizing my cd-rom drive. This drive is in the fixed bay side of my pc. It seemed to happen right after upgrading the os to sp1a (sp 1a is probably the wrong version i should have installed / i think it should have been sp 1). I have since uninstalled the sp 1a upgrade. I have also checked the bios settings which displayed the device installed. It is in the device manager without any conflicts listed. I have uninstalled the device and allowed windows to reinstall it upon reboot, in which it found the device and reinstalled but still was not recognized in my comp. I have run the diagnostics from the dell resource cd (from my cd-rw-dvd removable drive bay) and it had failed the quick test but passed the advanced (extensive) tests. Other than being listed in the Device Manager with no conflicts and in the BIOS, my cd-rom drive does not exist to my computer by any other information sources on my machine. Anyone have any suggestions for this head scratching situation?

Thanks. . .
