configuration in the registry error

My computer does not recognize my cd-rw drive. Went to device manager and get message that the configuration (in the registry) is corrupted or incomplete. Can anybody tell me how to fix the problem? Note: I am technologically challenged so do'nt answer in too techy language, please! I am fairly certain that the hardware itself is functional as I tried a brand new cd-rw and had the same problem. Also, replaced the ribbon cable with no further success. When I went to device manager, I tried uninstalling the hardware and then reinstalling. I get a message that says that system encountered an error during installation and hardware may not function properly. The device manager shows the cd-rw as being installed but there is a yellow exclamation point that tells me about the configuration in the registry issue. If I go to "my computer" there is no icon for the cd-rw. Any ideas?
