It stopped working tonight and when it starts it displays pink squares all over the main bios screen and then they go to reveal vertical lines. The system will not boot up, i have tried to re-install the Vista OS but when it fionally goes to start windows nothing happens. ITs 2 years old. I turn it off and then can choose to boot to safe mode with networking and internet works, so i then go to re start and i get the pink squares and nothing boots up.
Sadly yes... i did a full diagnostic check and yes the video failed every one.
A question foryou, when i bought this pc i got the Dell reccomended video card with the higher display 1400 x 900 i think and its to much for my eyes, i hope i can ask to have the basic card put back in ? ... hopefully cheaper to :)
actually the higher the resolution the less eye strain you will have.
ACTUALLY your inspiron has a LCD screen which makes it harder to strain your eyes. As long as your in a well lit enviroment LCD screens make it much harder for you to strain your eyes. Basically all you need to know is that LCDs dont "flicker" like tradition CRT screens (the big fat old TVs that most of us still have), instead the liguid crystals (hence Liquid Crystal Display, LCD) bend at a certain degree and stay there until the image on screen changes. So anyway when they bend they dont move making a still image exactly like looking at a page out of a book. ah technology is a wonderful thing.
The problem that i have is when i open up internet explorer the window is like shrunk right over to one side of the screen and so i go to display settings and have to reduce the settings in there to say a 1400 x 900 or there abouts and i think thats what was doing my eyes in ..
I'm waiting to hear from Dell regarding my Video card problem, its still got over a year of warrenty on the PC so hopefully this can all be sorted soon
If you want things to appear bigger in IE, just go to View->Text size and choose a bigger size rather than the default medium. And any window can be maximized to occupy the whole desktop by clicking on the square next to the "x" at the top right of the window.

Sounds like a dying video card. To confirm, press F12 at powerup, load the Dell diagnostics and run a full test.
