Where can I find documentation about installing IT Assistant management station to use a remote SQL 2000 server? I don't what to install SQL 2000 on the management station as I already have several SQL 2000 servers that I can use for the DB.
SNMP? Does the use of a remote SQL Server for IT Assistant really need the SNMP service running? I am using IT assistant now with a local DB and I am not using SNMP for client connectivity. So I am confused as to why I would need SNMP running for a remote SQL server.
Only the system running IT Assistant needs to have SNMP on it. The Remote SQL Server doesn't need to have SNMP on it. Even though you're only discovering client systems on your IT Assistant box, the requirement still remains within IT Assistant. I believe that the problem is that IT Assistant was originally designed to manage servers. The way that they discovered the servers was through SNMP. So they made the presence of SNMP a requirement within their code. Now that SNMP isn't necessary for discovering all devices within IT Assistant, hopefully they will take away the requirement. Until then, we will just have to make sure that it is installed. You can still set the SNMP service to not allow packets from other hosts and that will help keep things secure. Does that make sense?
If you are ONLY discovering client systems such as Optiplex systems, then yes, I'm 100% sure that SNMP is just a presence thing. I know this because, after installing IT Assistant, I went into the registry and modified the two IT Assistant services by removing SNMP from the "DependOnService" varbind. Then I rebooted the IT Assistant server, launched IT Assistant, and discovered an Optiplex SX260. No error messages occurred.
However, if you are discovering things such as servers, tape libraries, printers, network switches, or Dell/EMC Arrays, then SNMP is definitely being used.
