    Hi,
    • IT Assistant is the management station for managing systems (one-to-many) in your network.
    • OMSA provides one-to-one management for the server on which it is installed.
    • OMCC is useful if you are managing clients. Typically it is used in conjunction with OMCI.
    Here is my suggestion:

Have one of your systems act as the management station, by installing ITA on it. You need to install OMSA on each of the managed nodes (other servers in your network), and configure SNMP settings etc. Then you can discover them from ITA. ITA will display them in the Devices view under appropriate group.

( Note that you need not necessarily go to each system and manually install OMSA on it. You could use the software deploy feature of ITA to push OMSA for you).

OMSA and ITA both provide a web based UI. If you want to have fine control over an individual server, use the OMSA UI (for changing, say, alert thresholds for temperature, voltage, etc). If you want one-shot view of what is happening in your network, use ITA. From the device view in ITA, you can always right-click any server and launch its OMSA console. You can also use ITA to run tasks on multiple systems in your network, do performance monitoring of your servers, and do firmware updates.

If you are not planning to manage clients (which I guess is the case), you won't need to install OMCC. If you want to manage them as well, then  install OMCC on the same box as ITA, and also install OMCI on each of the client systems (notebook, desktop etc).

On a sidenote, it might be a good idea to go through the ITA User Guide - there is a section that helps you decide which protocols (CIM, SNMP, IPMI and the agents) etc you should choose, choices to be made before ITA installation, etc...

Excellent 'plain english' explanation (which I was looking for).

Now, the other question I do have is licensing...

Each server comes with OMSA. Each client (optiplex, lattitude, others ?) come with OMCI. And AFAIK, updates images have been available via support to download.

But now, servers are offering 'subscription service' for OMSA. Is it just a 'CD shipment' ? From the openmanage page, it says "There is no need to purchase a subscription for every server - you can enjoy the convenience of using one subscription on multiple servers."

Also, for ITA and OMCC, are any extra licenses needed ?

    TIA...

The various OpenManage software (ITA, OMSA etc) are available from the support.dell.com site... (provide appropriate details of your server and go to the downloads section).

The subscription service does include CD shipment, I think, for a certain period. You periodically get updates of various OpenManage software. One CD in the subscription kit that is specifically noteworthy, it is the Server Update Utility (SUU) that provides latest drivers, BIOS, firmware etc. I've seen some members in this forum mention using it.

Right - But even the SUU is also available via ISO images from dell support site. I mean, the more I read into it, the whole subscription is just a CD shipment, right ?

The only benefit of the subscription services is CDs delivered to your door.  The ISO images for all 5 disks are located at ftp.dell.com\sysman

Currently all Dell Openmanage apps are free, no licensing is required other than the EULA.
