Assuming you are referring to the free Spybot S&D and Ad-Aware 2007 (there are knock-off rogue programs with similar sounding names), and are asking which is a better on-demand anti-spyware scanner, I would say they are complementary. Each might find things the other would not, and there is no reason to limit yourself to picking just one. I have both. They don't conflict.
They do differ somewhat in additional features, which one may or may not find useful.
Ad-Aware offers a quick scan, Spybot does not. Both offer manual updates about once per week. Full scan times are similar with both. Spybot offers some real-time protection against registry changes that some find useful. Ad-Aware 2007 had some glitches when introduced a while back, which seem to be resolved. Novice users might find Ad-Aware a bit more simple and user-friendly.
No reason not to try both, and decide for yourself.
1) let's reiterate (as Joe stated) that the Ad-Aware to be considered is
2007... but that Ad-Aware
SE has now been rendered obsolete, in that no more updates will be available for it.
2) there's
a lot more to SpyBot than just its scanner (again, as Joe quickly alluded to): It offers resident anti-malware protection (
TeaTimer), bad-download protection (
SDHelper IE Browser Helper Object), and IE+Hosts
Immunization.
I think Spybot is a more valuable program. I've used both for years, and the only thing Ad-Aware SE and its predecessors have ever found on my computers are tracking cookies. Whereas Spybot might (on a rare occasion) find a far more malicious program or file.
I'm not using Ad-Aware 2007, perhaps it has a more aggressive scanning engine. I tried Ad-Aware 2007 briefly when it first came out, but was annoyed when I discovered that it installed its own XP service, so I removed it.
