USB redirection
Hello,
We are currently busy creating a new ICT environment where vWorkspace will play an importend role. For terminal server connections the supplier choose Windows Server 2008 x86 version as OS. This is because USB redirection does not seem to work with Windows server 2008 R2 as terminal server.
Has anyone experients with this? Or is this on the roadmap?

Mark, I believe that you are referring to USB Mass Storage redirection which is supported out of the box with 2008 R2.
Martijn, are you referring to the same thing or were you looking to redirect different USB devices?

Hello Mark and Matt,
So if i understand correctly. you are using vWorkspace 7.2 with Windows server 2008 R2 RDS sessions. And your clients are using a thin client? And USB mass storage redirection is working, which results in using the usb device in the rds session?

Martijn - I am not using a Thin Client but that shouldn't matter this will still work. If you are connecting from a Windows or Linux based device and enable drive mapping this will include any attached USB drives, they will then appear as mapped drives on the hosted desktop.

Hello,
The client application you are talking about is that the Virtual USB hub client? Because if i understand the documentation correctly that should do the trick. But i cannot find if it is supported on a WES 7 thin client in combination with a 2008 R2 rds desktop.

As you point out, our raw usb hub redirection is only available in the VDI environment with physical and virtual desktops (NOT terminal servers). The reason for this is that the redirected usb hub is seen in the terminal server as a global bus and every TS session would see every other session device, which might totally confuse the terminal server users. We have been looking at ways to adapt the vdi solution and make it session aware, but it is difficult because of the hardware architecture involved.
As Mark points out, we do offer a legacy USB redirection in TS which was developed specifically for Blackberry Desktop Manager with early Blackberry models and later extended to several Palm and early Windows CE mobile devices. This TS only module, called USB-IT, is legacy-device specific redirection only and is outlined on page 565 of the Admin guide...

Hello Terry,
To come to a conclusion. The legacy module USB IT can be used in a TS environment with 2008 x86 / x64 and 2008 R2 TS desktops. To connect a blackberry or an USB drive for example.
And the Virtual USB hub client can only be used in a Vitual or physical desktop environment. And then there more advanced features to manage USB devices.

Your conclusions are correct with one clarification; disk drives, whether usb or not, can be redirected by native RDP, if the remote disk drive channel is enabled on the client. We don't need usb redirection exclusively for disk drive device redirection.
Also, to re-state, the USB-IT module in RDS/TS redirects at the USB device level and is very specific to the legacy devices it will redirect. It only supports very eary blackberry models, older palm devices, and early Windows CE moble devices.
I'm told that we may see some expansion of our raw hub redirection into the RDS/TS platform in future releases of vWorkspace as many customers need this capability.
